Thoughts on Peace

On Friday we read a book to help us reflect on Remembrance Day and peace.  It was “What Does Peace Feel Like?” by Vladimir Radunsky. This book was written by students at an international school in Italy, and combines beautiful pictures with wonderful words.

After reading the book we created our own writing.  Each table group had a different sense, and the students worked together to write or draw their own meanings for peace.  We emphasized cooperation and taking turns, since there was only one piece of paper for 4 or 5 students.

They came up with some lovely ideas.  Here are a few of my favourites:

What does peace sound like?

  • Birds flying in the sky
  • The giant crunch of a lollipop

What does peace look like?

  • Poppies
  • Sand castles
  • Peace is a sunny summer day

What does peace smell like?

  • Pizza
  • Fish and crab (because that’s what his cottage smells like)

What does peace taste like?

  • Ice cream
  • Cotton candy

What does peace feel like?

  • Silk and muffins
  • The best day ever!
  • Love around the world

Map Making

As part of our learning about transportation and our community, we made maps to represent what we saw on our recent field trip.  Students were introduced to the concept of a legend on a map, and chose four different colours to represent the four ways we travelled.  All maps had to include our school and Lonsdale Quay, as well as some of the other things we saw throughout the course of our day.  Grade Twos were expected to label their maps, Grade Ones had the option of writing their own labels, or telling me what to write.

I am quite pleased with how they turned out.  Visit our display in the hallway to see all of the maps and writing about our fantastic field trip!

Happy Halloween!

This afternoon we had a fun Halloween celebration!  The students performed very well at our Community Gathering; they sang “Nobody Likes Me, Everybody Hates Me, Think I’ll Go Eat Worms” and danced to “Elephants Have Wrinkles.”  Then we had stations in the classroom.  We decorated Jack o’Lanterns,

made dancing spiders,

and decorated cookies.

It was a fun and relaxing afternoon.  I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween night!

Transportation Field Trip

This past week we went on a field trip as part of our community unit.  We wrote about our field trip later in the week, using the skills we learned about telling steps in order.  Rather than me telling you about it, I will let you read some of the students’ writing.  I have typed them as the students wrote them, and all the students have been using their Kidwriting (writing the sounds they hear) to write words they don’t know how to spell.  These are all Grade Two students, the Grade One Kidwriting is still a bit tricky for grownups to read 😉

Under the Sea!

This afternoon was our first dance performance of the year– and it was great to see so many parents in the audience.  The students had been working with two Danzmode instructors over the past few weeks, learning about musical theatre.  Division 7 & 8 performed a dance to Under the Sea.  It was a tricky routine, but their enthusiasm was great!  Here is a photo from our morning rehearsal:

I thoroughly enjoyed all the performances; it’s so interesting to see the progression of skills as students move up through the grades.  I also love musicals, so I thought the music was fantastic!  I am going to be singing “Hard Knock Life” for days!
