Playground movie

Last week we made a video to remind people about safe behaviour on the playground, which we shared at the community gathering today.  We brainstormed things we had seen on the playground which were not safe, then got into groups to plan ways to show the right thing to do.  The students could choose if they wanted to be an actor, a cameraperson, or an editor.  The cameraperson in each group filmed the actors showing how to be safe on the playground.  Once all the groups had filmed, the editors decided which takes were the best and put them into iMovie.  Then I added a title slide and ending slide, since I didn’t know how to do it at first.  Now that I do, I know that I can show the editors how to do it next time.  Our video was a hit at the community gathering; if you missed it, send me an email and I will figure out how to export the movie!

Fall Leaves

Last week we learned how to quill paper to make some fall art.  To create the basic circle we rolled a paper strip around a pencil, let it release a bit, then glued the end down.  Then using the basic circle, we pinched one end to make a tear drop, or both ends to make an eye.  Glue together a few shapes, add a stem, and voila… a leaf!  They look very festive hanging in our classroom!

Mercy Watson

I have been meaning to read this book for ages and just haven’t gotten around to it, so I decided to choose it as our first class read-aloud.  Mercy is a pig with personality!  She lives with Mr. & Mrs. Watson and loves hot buttered toast.  When she climbs into bed with Mr. & Mrs. Watson and the floor starts to break, she goes in search of toast, but they think she is rescuing them.  Mercy peers through the neighbour’s windows, waking them up, and adventure ensues!

This is a great beginning chapter book, there are lots of pictures and the chapters are short.  I am hoping students will seek out other books in the series when we visit the library today.  If you want to see more visit http://www.mercywatson.com

First Day (with our new classes) of School!

Happy first day!  It was so exciting to meet my new class today!  We spent a lot of time last week placing students carefully, and I knew who was coming to me, but it’s just not the same as having everyone in one room.  I anticipate many learning adventures this year!

Intake conferences are on Wednesday and Thursday this week.  Please complete the blue form which came home today and bring it to your conference.  This is a chance for me to get to know my students a bit better, and I appreciate all the insight parents bring.  I look forward to meeting you all this week!
